HyperFoil: Hyperspectral imaging for automated laser ablation of coated foils
HAIP Solutions is redefining quality assurance in laser processing of coated foils. As part of the HyperFoil research project, we are developing an innovative approach that combines hyperspectral imaging (HSI) with automated laser ablation by enabling precise material removal, real-time process control, and greater design freedom in industrial manufacturing.
The Challenge: Inconsistent coatings and unreliable results
Decorative and functional foils are used across industries like automotive, electronics, and furniture manufacturing, because these films serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. However, as design demands increase for finer structural details, sharper contours and greater customisation.
Traditional laser ablation often struggles to deliver consistent results, because local variations in coating composition can lead to problems like uneven material removal or substrate damage, negatively impacting product quality, production speed, and process reliability.
The Solution: Spectral sensing meets intelligent laser control
In HyperFoil, a joint project with Fraunhofer IFAM, SiTec, Manikewicz, and HAIP Solutions, we are developing a technology demonstrator for inline-capable, quality-assured laser ablation. At the core of this innovation is HAIP’s hyperspectral imaging technology, enabling real-time, pixel-precise coating analysis.
Key benefits of the solution:
- Real-time detection of coating thickness and material variations
- AI-powered laser parameter adjustment for selective layer removal
- On-camera machine learning for classification and anomaly detection
- Custom illumination systems for consistent, high-fidelity imaging
HAIP Solutions technology
As a technology leader in hyperspectral imaging for industrial applications, HAIP Solutions provides:
- BlackIndustry cameras with pushbroom technology for high-resolution SWIR imaging
- Edge processing capabilities with real-time machine learning directly on the sensor
- Integrated illumination systems designed for laser ablation environments
- A robust platform for fully automated process optimisation and quality assurance
The result: A formerly manual, lab-based process becomes an automated, inline-capable solution for advanced manufacturing.
Shaping the future of industrial laser processing
HyperFoil demonstrates how photonics, AI, and spectral sensing can converge to unlock new possibilities in surface processing. This approach offers maximum precision and repeatability, educed scrap and process downtime, and greater design flexibility for coated foils and complex surfaces. By integrating hyperspectral imaging into laser ablation workflows, HAIP Solutions is setting new standards in industrial quality assurance and digital manufacturing.
